School Introduction

China cannot do without the world and the world needs China. In the overall context of the peaceful rise of China and China’s rapid integration into the international community, the International Communication Department and the International Chinese Language and Culture Communication Base that has been setup in the school cooperate closely to vigorously build the four specialties: the Business English Specialty, the Leisure Services and Management Specialty, the Modern Communication (Chinese Teaching for Foreigners and Culture Communication) Specialty and the Secretary Specialty and cultivate high-quality skill-oriented talents to implement the “bringing in and going global” strategy in terms of the commerce, trade, tourism and culture of Hunan Province.  

Our department has 52 teaching and administrative staff and a foreign teacher. The full-time teachers with sub-senior professional titles or above account for 35% of the total staff and the full-time teachers with medium-grade professional titles account for 61%. The employees with master degrees account for 85%. One employee has a doctor degree and one employee is a doctoral candidate. The double-professionally -titled teachers account for 63%. Seven employees used to go to the United States, Europe, Australia, Thailand, Japan, Singapore, etc. to visit, study or work. Two employees used to teach Chinese language in the United States. Our school is a director unit of the English Research Society of Hunan Higher Vocational Education and actively guides the English teaching development and research of the higher vocational colleges in Hunan Province.

Our department has advanced teaching equipment and excellent facilities. We have four high-end audio-visual classrooms, three autonomously interactive learning rooms, one business training room, one business negotiation training room, one tour guide simulation training room and one Chinese and western culture experience room.

Our department adheres to the talent training mode based on the university-industry cooperation and the production-research combination and focuses on cultivating the vocational skills and comprehensive capacities of the students. Our academic style is strict, our students work hard to improve themselves and our activities are diversified and colorful. Our teachers love their jobs and are devoted to their work. They set good examples for the students. They devoted themselves to cultivating the talents with virtue, excellent learning, good foreign language knowledge, professional expertise and good cross-cultural communication abilities. In recent years, the students of our department have achieved many excellent results in the national and provincial English competitions. More than 20 of our students have successively obtained special awards and first awards in the National English Competition for College Students and the Spoken English Competition for Higher Vocational College Student of Hunan Province. The employment rate of our graduates has been above 95% for the recent three years. Our teachers and students have acted as teachers, investigators, researchers, interpreters and volunteers in many foreign affairs activities such as the "Chinese Bridge" Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students and the “Chinese Bridge Autumn Camp for UK Students” in recent four years, and their behavior have been well received.  

Our department and the International Exchange Division of the college have jointly carried international cooperation and exchange with Hongik University and Youngsan University of South Korea, University of Bridgeport and Sonoma Branch of University of California of the United States, and Coventry University of Britain. Our department offers the students an education level upgrade opportunity through the “3+1” teaching mode, i.e. the mode combining three years of domestic study and one year of abroad study.

Specialty Introduction 

Business English specialty

The specialty is a key construction specialty in the generalized preference system of the college. Relying on the practical training platforms such as the National Chinese Language and Culture Communication Base, Changsha IELTS Center and Yangshuo Spoken Language Practice Base in Guilin, It cultivates high-quality skill-oriented talents who are qualified for international business document handling, international trade business, business translation and foreign affairs-related public relations and secretarial work, mainly providing high-quality skill-oriented talents for foreign affairs-related enterprises and public institutions. It also cultivates talents for the city-level and county-level kindergartens, primary schools and English training institutions. The practice and employment units for the business English major students include Dubai Duty Free, Dubai Mall, Hunan Jincheng Logistics Co., Ltd., China Merchants Bank, China Telecom and Shenzhen Mobile.

Leisure service and management specialty 

The specialty cultivates high-quality skill-oriented talents with good service awareness, good basic professional leisure service and management theories and knowledge, healthy, scientific and reasonable leisure values, one or two leisure skills, good practical abilities and professional skills who understand the basic pattern and operation rules of the leisure industry, are suitable for working in the sports and leisure industry, the tea culture leisure industry, other leisure-related industries and other support industries, providing qualified talents for sports and leisure venues, tea culture leisure venues, clubs, passenger liners, international travel agencies, tourism companies, foreign affairs-related starred hotels, etc. The permanent practice and employment units include Hunan Tianzhiyou Ship Management Co., Ltd., Hunan Overseas Travel Co., Ltd., Hunan Branch of China CYTS Tours Holding Co., Ltd., Hunan Satellite TV Travel Agency, Yiwu Hotel, the Empark Grand Hotel Changsha and Sanjing Whiersly Hotel Changsha.

Modern communication (Chinese Teaching for Foreigners and Culture Communication) specialty

The modern communication specialty (Chinese teaching for foreigners and culture communication) is an emerging specialty built by our school on the basis of the Hunan Base for International Chinese Language Communication complying with the favorable situation for the international communication of Chinese culture. The specialty cultivates high-quality skill-oriented Chinese language and Chinese culture training and communication talents and relevant consultants, planners, publicity and promotion personnel with good Chinese language and Chinese culture knowledge and skills, good English application and cross-culture communication and transmission capacities who can independently or collaboratively carry out Chinese language and Chinese culture communication work, mainly providing qualified talents for domestic and foreign Chinese language teaching for foreigners institutions and Chinese culture communication institutions. The cultivated students should also be qualified for bilingual training, consultancy and promotion of primary schools and preschool education organizations or Chinese-foreign culture exchange work such as foreign affairs-related secretary work, publicity towards foreigners and foreign affairs-related culture communication work.

The Office of Chinese Language Council International has established the Hunan Base for International Chinese Language Communication in our school, which provides favorable conditions for the development of the specialty. It is worth to mention that the "Chinese Bridge" Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students has been held in our school for four successive years since 2009, which has caused great social response. Our school has successfully held the “Chinese Bridge Autumn Camp for UK Students”, carried out culture and education exchange and cooperation with many domestic and foreign universities and started recruiting international students. In these activities, the teachers of the specialty have made arrangements for carrying out the questionnaire inquiry on the Chinese learning of the foreign “Chinese Bridge” competitors and teaching international students Chinese. The students of the specialty have actively participated in the volunteer work for “Chinese Bridge”. They have carried out cultural exchange and held get-togethers with the international students, which has greatly enriched the practical experiences of the teachers and students of the specialty in Chinese teaching for foreigners and culture communication.

The specialty has 11 full-time and part-time teachers including two associate professors and nine lecturers. They are all young and middle-aged teachers and they have mainly majored in English, Chinese and pedagogy. They have rich practical experiences and the structure is quite reasonable. Some of them used to teach Chinese in the United States and some of them have taught Chinese at wholly foreign-owned enterprises for a long time. There is a good academic atmosphere among the students of the specialty. They work and study together and keep forging ahead. They are active, optimistic and versatile. They actively participate in various professional practices and extra-curricular activities. They have obtained good results in various activities of the department or school, and they have won the honors such as the provincial-level and college-level “Excellent Class” and “Excellent Youth League Branch” for many times.  

Secretary (modern office management) specialty 

The specialty has a teaching team with a good understanding of the theory and abundant practical experiences. It has all the professional experiment and training venues and equipment needed. It has a systematic “competency-based and employment-oriented” professional course teaching system “with the professional skills as the core”. It cultivates the high-quality skill-oriented secretary talents with good professional ethics, humanistic qualities, innovative spirits, good writing abilities, good communication abilities and good modern office technology application abilities qualified for office procedure work, helping the superior handle government affairs and daily routine and providing services for the decision making of the superior and the decision implementation, mainly providing qualified talents for various media organizations, the party and government offices at all the levels and the relevant enterprises and public institutions. The permanent practice and employment units of the specialty include Hunan Province Archives, Sany Heavy Industry, GAC Mitsubishi Motors Co., Ltd., Hunan Zhong’an Bio-Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Hunan Unicom and EE-Media.
